Concrete Solutions

Concrete repair & protection

Despite the high quality and special qualities of concrete, damage can occur that requires maintenance, repair and protection. A distinction must be made between environmental influences and production faults with respect to concrete damage. Environmental influences can include exhaust fumes, acid rain, frost and de-icing salts. Here, the chemical properties are changed so that the steel reinforcements in the concrete start to rust. Shrinkage cracks, pipes, gravel pockets and insufficient concrete cover are typical production faults that also promote corrosion of the reinforcements.
Concrete repair systems
  • Repair systems - The concrete repair systems offered can be used to protect against corrosion and coat everything in just one day. It is not worth travelling to a building twice to carry out a small repair job on e.g. balcony tiles or railings. It is therefore essential to have a fast product system that works with a few matched products and, at the same time, has very good workability characteristics.
  • Structural concrete repairs - From full-surface application on civil engineering structures through to the re-profiling of extremely exposed building components
Surface protection systems
High-quality impregnations or crack-bridging coatings to increase the protection of the concrete against the penetration of moisture, CO² and salts that affect the reinforcement.

Crack repair systems
A lot of damage to concrete structures occurs as a result of cracks and cavities that allow pollutants to penetrate the structure. These damaging influences impair the function of the concrete and thereby considerably reduce the load bearing capacity of the construction work.
  • Filling cracks - aims to inhibit and prevent penetration of substances that corrode concrete and steel. If there is a repeat cause for cracks, it can be assumed that the crack will occur again, however with a non-critical crack width. Closing cracks by filling them should not be seen as a constructive intervention.
  • Structural crack injection - WIth structural injection, the crack edges are filled with hydraulically bound or polymer crack filling materials so that a transfer of pressure, tensile or shear forces in the building component can be recreated. This procedure can only be applied in cracks where the cause of the cracks has been removed.
  • Limited elastic crack injection - In the case of partially expandable filling, the crack edges are connected elastically with an elastic polymer crack filling material. This technique is only suitable for filling cracks where the cause is not eliminated.

Concrete admixtures

Concrete is one of the most frequently used building materials of our time. Due to growing demands, this three-substance system (aggregates, water, cement) that has been known for centuries has become a system that fulfils modern construction demands due to the use of concrete admixtures and additives. The use of concrete admixtures in a powder and/or fluid form has a lasting effect on the fresh and hardened concrete properties depending to the type of admixture. When using one or several admixture types, the installer needs to verify the effectiveness in an initial test patch.
  • Plasticisers - Concrete admixtures of the plasticiser type has a plasticising effect on the fresh concrete. The working time of this admixture is about 30 minutes and is temperature dependant. By using a plasticiser, the water content can be reduced and the consistency is retained, or the water content can be retained and the workability can be increased.
  • Delaying agent - Concrete admixtures of the delaying agent type prolong the time between mixing and the transition of the fresh concrete to new concrete. The associated longer workability time of the fresh concrete is necessary to ensure compliant installation and compression at high temperatures. In the case of large building structures, the use of these agents ensures that the individual concrete layers are correctly compressed.
  • Sealants - Concrete admixtures of the water-proofing type reduce the capillary water uptake and can give the concrete water repelling (hydrophobic) properties.

Concrete release agents

Concrete can be used for various areas of application. From the highest design requirements and use in exposed concrete façades through to multiple daily use of formwork tables in the prefabricated industry. Here, the concrete release agents are crucially important for 0na optically flawless concrete surface. The surface requirements are fulfilled, when the mixture is coordinated to the respective formwork surfaces, e.g. steel framework or absorbent and non-absorbent timbering. Also, the use of separating agents maintains and protects the formwork and/or formwork skin so that cost-intensive re-occupation of the formwork with the formwork skin can be reduced. To meet the highest requirements for fair-faced concrete (exposed concrete classes 3 and 4), it is recommended that a test surface is recommended in consulation with contractors and concrete suppliers.

Products for post-treatment and the creation of construction joints
Post-treatment agents - Freshly installed and compressed concrete must be protected against fast drying out so that the edges of the concrete are resistant to the penetration of corrosive substances. This drying process is accelerated, in particular at high temperatures, low humidity and wind, so that severe cracks can be formed before the concrete is cured. In addition to classic after-treatment methods e.g. leaving the formwork on, so-called curing agents can also be used. Curing agents are fluid after-treatment agents with a high water-blocking capacity. The application quantity stated in the technical information sheets must be strictly adhered to. Creation of construction joints - Special solutions are necessary to waterproof construction joints e.g. of recesses or openings that need to be sealed later. Remmers supply corresponding Bentonite-based waterstop tapes or a tested system with injection hoses.
